We wanted a way to light up a path in the motorhome for a couple reasons. One - when we return to the motorhome at night we wanted a way to enter the dark motorhome with out tripping. Two - we wanted a way to have a path for nighttime when Sue has already gone to bed and I am staying up and watching TV. When I turned the TV off, the motorhome would get real dark and I would trip over furniture making my way back to the bedroom. If we left on any other lights they would put a glare on the TV. Also any other light would put a glare on my computer screen if I was up working on the computer late. This way the light is down low and it lights up a walkway, kinda like an airplane aisle. :)
I purchased 6' of 12 volt rope lights from the camp store at Tiffin's Red Bay Service Center when we were there for our warranty repairs. But you can purchase the rope lights online and at your local hardware store. I also purchased a brown single light switch from them. I mounted the light switch right next to the existing light switch/water pump switch. There was a 12 volt wire already run to that area that wasn't being used along with a ground wire that wasn't being used. So I didn't have to run any wires to that area. Great!
The rope lights come with a piece of plastic the lenght of the rope and about a 1/2" wide. I used this piece of plastic to screw the rope light under the lower cabinets above the toe board. I then wired the rope lights to the switch allowing enough slack in the wires to allow when the kitchen slide moves in and out. You can't see the lights mounted under the cabinets and it lights up real good at night.
